Finding good PS4 games for kids isn’t actually as easy as you’d think. There’s a ton of games out there, but many of them just aren’t suitable for most kids. But, it’s easier to find games for PS4 than it is to find games for the Nintendo Switch.

In a world of Call of Duties and Grand Theft Auto’s, it can be really hard to find a good game for kids. Not just younger kids either, but also those entering teenage years that you don’t think are ready to start violently murdering people and stealing cars (in games, of course) just yet.

Depending on your kids tastes, there’s a variety of different games available that might be suitable. We’ll run through a ton of different games that are worth considering here, including which age range they’re probably best suited to.

Best PS4 Games for Kids

Any Lego Game

One of my favorite Lego games was released in 2018, which was Lego Incredibles. The game that no-one really asked for, but everyone adored when it was finally released. There have also been a ton of other decent Lego games released in the last few years, like Lego Marvel Superheroes 2, which is the sequel to the first release of the same game (and it’s much better, I might add). Generally a few lego games get released each year, so it’s a good idea to keep your eyes peeled for them.

Rocket League

If you want a game that’s great for pretty much all ages that both young kids and adults can enjoy, then my first suggestion would likely be Rocket League. What was once a small independent game was developed into the massive online phenomenon it is now, with it being one of the most popular games online. There’s many tournaments every year, and it has it’s own E-league.

Rocket League is essentially soccer with cars, but there’s much more to it than that. You’re able to fully customize your car, and the difficult comes with controlling your car and making in manoeuvre through the air. With the game getting updated frequently, it’s a good choice for any kids.

Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy

For years, Crash games were released that didn’t really hit the mark. But in 2017, the N Sane trilogy was released making it one of the best selling kids games in recent years. With this trilogy, you’re not getting anything new – it’s remastered versions of the original Crash Bandicoot games, which is one of the most popular games series of all time. You’ll get Crash BandicootCrash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back and Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (which is my personal favorite). Whilst the game itself has particularly simplistic gameplay, which make it ideal for younger kids.

Chimparty is worth considering if you’re after a party game to play with your entire family. Whilst it isn’t going to keep parents or adults in the game (it’s extremely basic and simple), it can be good entertainment and it helps to fill the gap in the market of games for younger people (it’s suitable for all ages). They’ll definitely enjoy the customization available with your chimp. It’s very similar to Mario Party, and like you might have thought, some of them are great, whilst others are.. well, they suck.

But, Chimparty makes sense if you’re looking for a good game to play at Christmas or at the weekends with your kids.

Gang Beasts

A similar game to Chimparty in it’s format, it’s another party game that you can play with up to four players. The gameplay itself is lacking a little bit in all honesty, but the game itself looks really good. For me, it’s not as good of an option for a multiplayer game as Chimparty, but it still provides another alternative that you might want to consider. It’s a silly beat ’em up multiplayer game, but it could be decent if you can find it for a cheap price.

Knack 2

Ask anyone that’s played Knack 1 and they’ll tell you how disappointing it was. And, there was no one as surprised as me that Knack 2 actually turned out to be a really decent game. The gameplay for Knack 2 was greatly improved on the original. It’s also available in co-op mode, which is great because there’s a massive lack of co-op games available, so having a new one is great for those of us that like to play with a friend.

Knack 2 is just a simple action game, though it does lack a lot in the storyline, the gameplay is decent itself. In Knack 2 you have the ability to go from a regular sized person to a large.. well, Knack. This is good for the gameplay, as it adds an element of stealth to the game, as opposed to just a smash ’em up game. It won’t keep older gamers occupied, but it is suitable for younger kids.

Ratchet and Clank

The first Ratchet and Clank was released all the way back in 2002, and one of the problems with these older games is that they don’t resonate with the young audience. Well, Ratchet and Clank seems to work pretty well, as this is just a reimagining of the first game from all those years ago.

Ratchet and Clank does pretty much everything well. There’s enough in the gameplay to make it fun but not too easy, and the storyline itself is pretty good, although some older kids might find the humour in the storyline a little bit cringey. Whilst it doesn’t have the same level of depth as it’s predecessors (less guns etc), it’s still another really good option for PS4.

Overcooked 2

Overcooked 2 is a good example of a modern day co-op game that actually works. A lot of the time these kinds of co-op games miss with their shots, but this can’t be said for Overcooked as it works extremely well. It’s essentially a typical multiplayer game where you get the opportunity to play through different levels, but the goal remains the same – to cook things properly! It’s a simple game, but it can be played by all the family which makes it a good one for young kids.

No list of games is complete without Minecraft – and that goes for adult lists and kids lists alike. Minecraft is the perfect game for young kids, as although like any video game it can be addictive, it’s been shown that like other building games, it’s great for brain development. Minecraft gives younger kids the option to think about things logically, helping to create their own cities. Minecraft is essentially the Lego of the 21st Century, and if you’re looking for a game that will keep your kids fixated for hours, Minecraft is an awesome choice.

Jump Force

Do your kids like Anime like My Hero Academia and Dragonball Z? Then the likelihood is that they’d love Jump Force, which is a street fighter style game that’s here in February of 2019 on a variety of different platforms. It’s one of the best choices if you’re looking for kids to play against each other without going online, as they’ll have a variety of different characters to choose from in the game. It’s suitable for kids of 12+.

Crash Team Racing

With the Crash Trilogy of remastered games being released back in 2017, many people have been waiting for a revamped version of Crash Team Racing, one of the most popular arcade racing games that’s been released in recent years. It’s a great choice for those looking for a game that’s suitable for playing as a party, because the whole family can enjoy this one.

Sonic Team Racing

Aside from Mario Kart and Crash, there haven’t been a ton of arcade racing games in recent years, especially for the PS4. Enter Sonic Team Racing, which looks to be one of the best family games coming out in 2019. This is the third release from Sonic, which looks to be a big improvement over prior releases in terms of both gameplay and graphics. Sonic is suitable for kids of all ages.

Dirt Rally 2.0

Driving games are few and far between nowadays, and aside from the F1 series, it seems like there really isn’t a great deal of variety out there when considering driving games. One of the best racing games that’s coming out in 2019 is Dirt Rally, and if it’s anything like it’s predecessor, it’s going to be pretty awesome. Plus, it’s suitable for kids of any age too.

The beta for Dreams arrived in 2018 and it’s due for release in 2019. Here’s a clip of some of the best from the beta and what we’ve got to look forward too.

As you can see from the video, Dreams looks to be one of the most unique and creative games to come out in 2019. So, it’s definitely worth considering this one if you want something a little different. Dreams looks to be more of a creating platform that a video games (it’s from the same makes as Little Big Planet). So if you want to get the kids something more productive than just mindless entertainment, then Dreams might be the way to go.

Dragonquest Builders 2

It’s only sensible that in a list of the best games, Dragonquest Builders makes it in there somewhere. The original was a favorite amongst both kids and adults, and the 2nd one has proved to be even better than the first one by all accounts (I might be a tad biased – I’ve just bought this one and started playing it myself!). Essentially, in Dragonquest Builders 2 the player is tasked with recreating the destroyed world, which I don’t want to give any spoilers for. But, you don’t need to have played the first one to enjoy Dragonquest Builders, and it’s definitely worth adding to your library.

Sports Games for Kids – Ideal Ages 7+

Madden as a game is underrated in my opinion. It’s very tactical in comparison to other games like FIFA, but this doesn’t rule out kids from playing it and it can help them to learn more about the sport in general. NFL is still the most popular sport in the US, so even though this game might not be as poplar in the rest of Europe, it’s still one to get for older kids. Typically like most Sports games, you’ll get a new release each year with updated rosters, though the different in gameplay between them tends to be very little.

FIFA is the first sports games that you’ll want to get on the Christmas list, and it’s the most popular sports games globally. It’s a good choice as a first game for any kids really, as it’s one of the most popular games around, so they’re always going to be able to find friends to play online with. It has a good career and season mode too, so if you prefer your kids playing offline, then the career mode will let them manage their own soccer team.

One thing to watch out with games like Fifa is that they have an Ultimate Team game mode. This is essentially where you can purchase cards online and trade them with other people to try and get the best team possible – there’s a whole transfer market online for these UT cards. This has come under a lot of criticism, with many people saying that essentially this is a ‘pay-to-win’ system and it is considered by some as gambling.

NBA 2k

2k is the best basketball game around and it has been for some time now. Although basketball tactics can be a little confusing for younger kids, the premise of the game itself is quite simple and they don’t need to be too old to get started. Like FIFA, it’s a great one to get if your kids are addicted to basketball. With the amount of trades that have been going on throughout 2019, NBA 2k20 is sure to be one of the most exciting games of the year.

Overall, these are just some of the best ps4 games for kids that are being, and have been released over previous years. Of course, there are a ton more out there to choose from, but this is a list of some of my favorites. Hopefully I’ll try to keep this list updated over the coming years, as well as looking what Xbox One games are good for kids, as well as venturing into other consoles too.

There’s a good mixture here of games for older kids, as well as some that might be better for young ones and the rest of the family. Make sure to check the age rating before you play to ensure that you’re happy with your kids playing the game, too.
