The video gaming industry has been blossoming and it is likely that it will continue to do so with the technology marching forward. Due to this, it is no wonder that new video game studios are popping up and new opportunities for game developers, designers, and other positions are opening, but how does one choose where to start and what company to apply for?

Not everyone can work for a gaming company like Alienware or MSI. So, we have taken the liberty of choosing for you and have compiled a list of best gaming companies to work for in the year 2020.

Best Gaming Companies To Work for in 2020

One of my first Gaming Jobs was at a fairly well known Gaming Company To Work for, it was one of those Gaming Jobs where you are just getting your feet wet in the Gaming world and doing general maintenance work with little pay (the reason why this job was one of my first gaming jobs).

This was a great place to start out though because I had time to learn all aspects of what went on inside this company and how they ran things. That’s what all of these companies have in common.

When it comes to big names and video games, Nintendo is about as big as one can get. Nintendo was founded back in 1889 and has managed to stay around for more than a hundred years becoming one of the most recognizable names within the video game industry. Nintendo began their journey as a small company producing playing cards, but over the years they turned towards video games and became famous for making their own consoles and developing video games for them.

Around 81% of reviewers on Glassdoor would recommend Nintendo as a good place to be working at which should be expected from a company that has managed to survive the turmoils and tribulations of the video gaming industry for over a hundred years. Many praise the company for being able to balance work and other aspects of life relatively well, but working late at night has become an everyday occurrence for their developers.

While Nintendo has been named as the “Best Workplaces in Canada in 2012 and as the “Best Workplaces in Canada (for women)” in 2012, Nintendo has also scored extremely low numerous times in Greenpeace’s “Guide to Greener Electronics”.

Bungie is definitely one of the big names when it comes to the modern video game industry. It was founded way back in 1991 and set themselves apart from the competition by successfully developing video 3D games for Macintosh computers. Their next big leap in the gaming industry was during the 2000s when another large company called Microsoft acquired them to work on a video game title called Halo. While Halo did make it big and has become a staple of the Xbox consoles ever since Bungie left Microsoft in 2007 and is currently working on their already famous Destiny franchise.

When it comes to whether Bungie is a good place to work at or not, there are a couple of websites that we can consult and according to Glassdoor, a majority of 72% of people who worked there would recommend it. Most of the employee reviews state that the company cares for the employees and provides multiple options for career growth, however, some of the more recent reviews tell a little different story. Some of those reviews state that recently, it is extremely hard to balance work at the company and everyday life, and others state that crunch hours have become an everyday norm again.

Over the years, Bungie has also been doing a lot of charity work, including helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti earthquake as well as numerous other natural disasters by selling T-shirts. They also regularly make donations to the Red Cross and run a nonprofit organization under the name of the Bungie Foundation. This organization focuses on using therapeutic entertainment in order to help children that have been hospitalized.

Epic Games

Another huge name of the modern video gaming industry that made onto the list. Founded way back in 1991 by Tim Sweeney, the company hasn’t changed CEO ever since, and almost thirty years later, Tim is still at the helm of the company. When founded, Epic emerged exclusively as a company that develops PC and console games, however, over the years the company has expanded and today, they run numerous studios across the world. Arguably their biggest achievement is the Unreal Engine which is one of the most popular game engines in the world.

Taking a look at Glassdoor once again, we can see that around 60% of employees would recommend Epic to a friend, however, if we take a look at the comments, we come across what is a mixed bag of opinions. On one hand, numerous anonymous reviews are calling Epic one of the greatest places to work for that offers good pay, quarterly bonuses, and challenging work. However, on the other hand, there are reviewers stating that working overtime is a regular occurrence and some have even compared Epic to a cult, saying that you will either like it or hate it.

Over the years, the company has grown to staff around 1000 employees all over the world and while it might not be the greatest place to work at, it is by far not the worst, so for those who want to work on newest leading games in the industry and a challenging atmosphere, Epic might be a good fit.

Naughty Dog

Naughty Dog started out as an independent video game studio way back in 1984 but was quickly acquired by Sony Computer Entertainment. Making their first appearance with video games of the Crash Bandicoot series, Naughty Dog faded out of the public eye as quickly as they rose to the top. While the company itself was adored by gamers, they spent more than a decade completely out of the public eye but then came back with a bang with their new video game franchises. While today they are known for making large gaps between video game releases, they are also known for releasing excellent video games and winning numerous awards for them.

Working at Naughty Dog is a very positive experience, at least 83% of Glassdoor reviewers claim so, but just like with every other entry on this list, there are polarizing claims. While some portray Naughty Dog as the best company to work for, another claim that long hours and late nights are a part of the deal, so those who want to do dedicate themselves to things other than video game developing might want to think twice before applying. Nevertheless, Naughty Dog does everything they can to make up for the overtime by offering employees additional bonuses and generous benefits packages as well as free dinners for those who chose to stay and work late at the office.

Riot Games

Last but not least we have a company you might have heard of, called Riot Games. Riot is a relatively young company that was founded in 2006 but they quickly became famous for their MOBA title League of Legends. They were also among the first companies to implement the “games as a service” business model which worked out for them quite nicely as they are one of the biggest names in the video game industry and they operate numerous esports events.

While Riot has not launched any groundbreaking new titles, their latest game Valorant is becoming one of the most popular video games, and it is still in the testing stages. Furthermore, it appears that Riot is going to be developing a video game similar to Minecraft as well as a couple of other games in popular genres and with proper guidance, any and all of them can become hits.

Working for Riot is an extremely pleasant experience, at least that’s what the 70% of Glassdoor reviewers who would recommend Riot say, however, as, with all of the previous entries, there are two sides to the story. While some call Riot the company of their dreams, others call it rotten and even toxic which is quite harsh. While Riot has won numerous awards, they have been involved in multiple allegations of harassment, misgendering, and sexual discrimination. It all depends on the team that you get assigned to we guess.

While many of us have different goals and different job expectations, we can all agree that a good company is the one that takes care of their employees, pays well, and makes balancing work and everyday life a possibility, and the companies mentioned above, more or less provide all of the above.
